Virgil Ortiz
From an early age, Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo) learned ceramic-making from his family, demonstrating his mastery of historic pots and figures. While he continues to make older forms, he has expanded his artistic practice to include video, fashion, and jewelry. He started his Revolt 1680/2180 over two decades ago, a retelling of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 with elements of science fiction, including the Venutian Soldiers, the Translator, the Aeronauts, and the Blind Archers. His Revolt series has been exhibited in prominent museums, including the Denver Art Museum, the Albuquerque Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Native American Art, and his work is in many prominent museum collections, such as the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian, the Denver Art Museum, and the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art.
“Clay is the core of all my creations. My work centers on preserving traditional Cochiti culture and art forms. It’s important to recognize that Pueblo communities are very much alive and have a level of vitality that speaks to generations of strength, persistence, brilliance, and thriving energy.”
- Virgil Ortiz, 2020
