MATTHEW BAHE
Matthew Bahe (Diné/Navajo) is a multidisciplinary artist based in New Mexico whose work explores the intersections of identity, memory, and lived experience in contemporary Indigenous life. Drawing from Diné cultural philosophies, the natural landscape, and the complexities of navigating Indigenous identity in the 21st century, Bahe creates works that balance personal narrative with broader collective histories. His practice spans painting, works on paper, sculpture, and mixed media.
Raised between the Navajo Nation and urban New Mexico, Bahe’s work reflects a deep connection to land and community while embracing experimentation and abstraction. His compositions often incorporate symbolic references to Diné cosmology, language, and traditional forms, reimagined through a contemporary lens. Bahe has exhibited throughout the Southwest and continues to expand his practice with a focus on cultural continuity, innovation, and storytelling.

Artist’s Statement
"My work is a way of staying in dialogue with the world I come from and the world I move through every day. I weave together memory, land, and the stories I was raised with—sometimes directly, sometimes abstractly—to explore how identity shifts over time and place. Creating art is an act of grounding, but also of questioning: What do we carry forward? What do we let go? What does it mean to remain connected while always evolving?"
